Calvin Klein
Born in the Bronx in 1942, Calvin Klein showed a passion for the fashion industry from a very young age. Similar to his counterpart Marc Jacobs he studied in New York at the High School of Art and Design. He then went onto study at the incredibly popular Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, a place where he would later gain an honorary doctorate in 2003.
In 1968 Klein took his first foray in to the business market and formed a business with his childhood friend Barry Schwartz. Calvin Klein Limited was also created this year as a coat shop in the York Hotel, New York City. The popular New York boutique store Bonwit Teller was to be Klein’s first buyer. The store specialising in high-end women’s fashion placed an order for several of Klein’s designs and the beginning of the label was born.
The expansion of the brand began in 1971 with the introduction of further lines to the label. Lingerie and sportswear were among the first lines to be added. Scarves, shoes and sunglasses were not too far behind all launching in 1977. By 1978 cosmetics, jeans and menswear had all joined the foray and the Calvin Klein brand was now built in to a multi-million dollar empire.
Today there are over ten different subsidiaries of Calvin Klein branding each specialising in a different area of the market. The stores including many of his subsidiaries can be found at all ends of the earth from the Far East to Europe and from Asia to the Americas. The brand also currently has around thirty different fragrances on the market for both men and women.
Calvin Klein has always attracted high-end celebrities both through its advertising campaigns and as its spokespeople. Jerry Hall, Eva Mendes, Diane Kruger and Doutzen Kroes have all represented the brand. The brand is currently represented by Jamie Dornan and Lara Stone.
